Shortness of breath was one of the symptoms that I went to the doctor for when I became very concerned about this symptom! I went from going on a carefree run with no issues, to struggling through my first mile of every run wondering if I now had exercise induced asthma…I literally thought, “what fresh hell is this”? My doctor shrugged her shoulders, told me it must be allergies and prescribed a steroid inhaler. Sigh…Needless to say, I didn’t fill the prescription, instead I dug deeper…

Hormonal fluctuations don’t just affect periods, mood, sleep, or weight — they have downstream effects throughout the entire body, including the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Here’s why shortness of breath can show up:

Estrogen actually plays a role in keeping airways open and supporting efficient respiration. As estrogen levels drop:
